Who we are

A workshop that grew into a global pioneer

OMRON began in 1933 as a three-person workshop. Founder Kazuma Tateisi — an inventor who had already tried his hand at knife-grinders and trouser presses — built a precision X-ray timer for hospitals and turned it into Tateisi Electric Manufacturing.

That instinct, anticipating a need and answering it with technology, still defines the company today. The name OMRON, adopted in 1990, comes from Omuro, the district of Kyoto where the first factory stood.

Now a global leader in automation, OMRON works across the factory, the city, and the home — guided by a single core technology it calls Sensing & Control + Think.

A history of world firsts

1933
Tateisi Electric Manufacturing is founded in Kyoto, building precision timers for hospital X-ray equipment.
1959
The corporate motto is established — “To improve lives and contribute to a better society” — still the company’s reason for being.
1960s–70s
A remarkable run of world firsts: the non-contact proximity switch, an electronic automated traffic signal, the automated ticket vending machine, and the world’s first automated train-station ticket gate — later recognized as an IEEE Milestone.
1990
The company is renamed OMRON Corporation, after the Omuro district of Kyoto where it all began.
Today
Around 30,000 people serve customers in more than 130 countries and regions across automation, healthcare, devices, and social systems.
